Apparently, a split-second oversurge from a near-miss lightning strike yesterday caused some of the magic goo to leak out of the capacitors near the MOSFETs that control the voltage and other such important things for my CPU socket, so I ran my machine, blissfully unaware, at 1/2 the usual speed and couldn't figure out why it was so fucking slow. Now that the cause has been pinpointed and a replacement ordered, I'm wondering what, if anything, can be done to prevent it in the future. I mean, I've got a 1000VA UPS from Belkin, it's not like I'm relying on a $5 Wal-mart power strip for my surge protection needs here.
Hmmm. . . back to NewEgg in the interim - the updated & upgraded of my current favorite Athlon board [Epox 8RDA3+, with the nForce2-400 chipset] is $87, with free shipping ($12 for two-day). Okay, that's good enough for me, it'll arrive before I head to Tampa [and investigating the damage was an opportunity to top off the distilled water keeping things cool].
Now, for that to arrive, along with the replacement for K's DOA board [hoping it works as well as Gru's], I'll be a busy little screwdriver-wielding monkey next week.
Oh. . . does anyone have a recommendation for an up-to-date version of BitTorrent? The old 3.2.1 build I'm using is, to be kind, not very good at anything over about 500mb. . . and that ain't gonna cut it if I'm going to be all weird and try and download all 9 seasons of the X Files.
