The first couple of times I voted for real, I did the write-in thing for Bill & Opus[1]. I didn't care in 1992 (well, I was more or less on board with my dad's support of Perot) or 1996 - Bill Clinton, to me, was a guy who had bad judgement when it came to women, and I never gave him any further thought. I voted for both the guys who lost to GWB. This is the first time in my life that the candidate I prefer actually won.
It's a weird and unfamiliar feeling.
Despite the relief and hope I feel in the aftermath of yesterday's presidential result, I'm still keenly disappointed by what appears to be across-the-board exclusionary, discriminatory bigotry winning out (Florida's Amendment 2, California's Prop 8, et al); the country collectively voted to say FUCK YOU, GAY PEOPLE. There are still hurdles to be cleared and walls to be knocked down and small-minded asshats who need their skulls pried open with crowbars and fucked bloody[2].
I'm about as straight as they come. The government has no business dictating morality or linguistics to me or anyone else. Neither, it should be said, does a majority of my fellow citizenry. Your baggage ought not to be my problem. What consenting adults choose to do is none of your fucking business. This was a setback, but, if history has shown us nothing else, it's that exclusion always loses in the long run - the slaves were freed, women got the vote, and now a black man has been voted into the highest office in the country; just because someone prefers shacking up with someone with whom they can't procreate doesn't make them less equal.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.
FUCKING ALL. Get it through your heads. You're wrong if you try to dictate or legislate anything that says otherwise. I've got two pieces of paper and some smart motherfuckers from the 18th century who say so.
As I said elsewhere yesterday, stop banging your head on the desk - the desk doesn't enjoy it as much as you do.
[1] I also printed out, in 312 point caps, FUCK THE SYSTEM / THE SYSTEM IS FUCKED and taped it to my jacket to go to my polling station [2]
[2] I've been a rude, crude, a-political asshole for a long time; the more things change, the more some things stay the same
