Just heard from my contact at MSFT. Sez they:

I'm back on US soil and I've done the following with your resume and samples:

* Sent them to the MS HR department as an employee "lead" (which internal jargon for an employee referral). This will give you company-wide coverage. They'll add your resume to a database and will cross reference any job openings with the details of your resume to find fits.
* Sent them to my immediate management team to see if anyone is currently hiring or looking for a writer/editor.
* Sent them to a contract agency in the area (Volt) that staff our projects with contract writers/editors. This is often a great way to get your foot in the door here. They'll do a lot of networking with hiring managers here in games and at MS at large.

A suitably enthusiastic thanks, including offers of doing whatever is necessary to get my butt hired, including flying up for an interview and being really, really, REALLY keen on relocation, has been summarily sent in reply.

the woman i spoke with 4-5 years ago, when i was trying to get the hell outta adelphia, was nice and helpful, but ultimately unsuccessful, so i don't have any horror stories [she, and they, were recommended to me by [livejournal.com profile] __masque at the time], but, yeah. . . my optimism is tempered by the fact that there might be other candidates, but i had an "in," which i hope counts for something in my favor.

Volt does have a mixed rep, but do due diligence and you should be OK. Good luck with M$.
