[this coming from a guy who, apparently, was victimized by either a bad IDE cable or power lead, -not- the IDE header in his work box on his day off].

I'm currently realizing just how dog-ass slow a dual P3 733 feels compared to an Athlon XP that's 3.3x faster in clock speed [2300MHz, reported as "Athlon 3100+" by the bios) (and approx 5x faster if you factor in processing power straight up, per distributed.net keycracking rates) when formatting large hard drive chunks.

However, once this lurching about is done, we'll have a brand-new, fast, and dedicated storage drive for the office, with RAID 1 redundancy planned, and the joy of putting my swapfile on something other than the boot drive. However, this machine still is slower than fuck. Perhaps an upgrade [courtesy of Dell's workstation tradeup program - https://www.dellworkstation.tradeups.com/easy.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1] if I can score a cheap enough iMac from another resident in my apartment complex might be feasible.

Watch this space for further oh-so-thrilling events - I'm currently resenting MS's decision to deny anyone who doesn't use Win2k Server from setting up mirrored volumes within the OS, and am seriously contemplating slapping XP Pro on this damn thing.
