The NPR coverage shed a little light on this - that he's grandstanding to feel important and claim credit, but I don't think that's the whole of it.

These assholes think they get a heavenly reward for dying in the service of jihad; getting the chair or whatever stupidly humane execution the State would impose is giving him exactly what he wants. This is one instance where life imprisonment is the bigger punishment to the guilty party. Frankly, I think this fuck should get the next sixty years in solitary, without anything in his cell with which he could do harm to himself. If that means he's naked in a padded room with a soft-sided shitter, so be it.

in the "good news at this end" front, kim starts volunteering at the lowry park zoo soon, and the guy there is really impressed with her and thinks she'll probably make the transition to paid keeper when they have an opening. downside: the pay sucks, but not to the point where she'd need another job.
