Thus far, [livejournal.com profile] yokes1971 pwns j00.

Working from home yesterday, as alluded to in some conversations yesterday evening, I got about as much done as I do when I'm actually in the office, but still felt obscurely guilty.

Then I realized that I need to work for six weeks and not eat or pay bills to cover what the new a/c unit & heat pump cost. They make the financing look attractive ($80/mo for 60 months), but I think I'm going to try and pay off as much as possible during the six months the interest-free grace period lasts, and will probably roll it all over to a credit card or something with a less-heinous interest rate (um, 18%. . . no).

On the upside, the guys from Action A/C improved some of the, uh, 'work' the AGD did when they installed the ducts, and the new unit works quite nicely.

Strong and reliable rumors persist that I'll actually be hired as a real employee (N, the big boss, told me on the sly on Friday, and I got word yesterday from an unrelated source that there will be two ILD permanent positions, as opposed to the seasonal ones, to be filled by myself and Shaky). I'm looking forward to seeing the actual paperwork before I do too much jig dancing, but, still, it'll be nice to have insurance and stuff.

ETA: Just got the official word. The job will be posted, and I'll need to apply for it, but no other candidates will be considered. Uh, glee?

So this company is getting the thumbs up from you?

The guys who did the install were quick, competent, made a point of cleaning up after themselves, and explained what they needed to do.

Turned out the digital thermostat I'd picked up from Home Despot wasn't the right one for the job, so that was a bummer (didn't include the 'emergency heat' setting), but otherwise, everything went off without a hitch, and they even take the old unit away (given the strained relationship we currently harbor with our trash collectors, that's probably for the best. Those fuckers didn't take our garbage on Monday, and it stinks like a pile of rotten feet).

Can you email me their contact info? Do they do in-home estimates?

Action Air Conditioning, on Armenia @ Busch. They have a different number for Pinellas, but I don't have their paperwork with me (I don't know if they have a web site, but at least they'll probably be listed online somewhere).

They do an in-home estimate (took about an hour), and will break down a couple of different models to fit multiple price points (I had to go with the least expensive option), and will also do an immediate check to see if you're approved for financing.

I found that being reluctant to buy right away worked as far as having them knock a hundred bucks off the price. They also have a sale going on because it's not peak season, and that also knocked $500 off. Upgrading to a 12 SEER unit with a heat pump will also qualify you for a $250 credit from TECO (I got turned on to AAC by the guy from TECO who came out to do my home energy audit).

I'm totally happy for *you* that you are pretty much guaranteed this job, which is excellent, but it completely pisses me off when companies do this (mind you, I am convinced that at least 50% of the job postings I've been seeing are similar, so this is a bit of a sore port for me at the moment...;)

It's required, apparently, because it's a newly-created position, and it has to be opened to any applicants who want to put their hat in the ring. This is also common in zookeeping and a lot of other industries - positions must be posted for X days, regardless of the pre-existing intent to hire a particular person.

I don't know what the bureaucracy behind it is, but there's probably EEOC or some other agency that mandated the practice.

Indeed. Yay for almost being assured of getting your own job!

I don't think it is federally mandated, but what do I know. Ultimately, I think it is a corporate developed safeguard against discrimination lawsuits - it's harder to be accused of neoptism/racism/[insert -ism here]-ism if you open the job to the public. The powers-that-be can then say, "Hey, we looked at multiple resumes, but the guy we already knew we wanted to hire was the best person for the job."

If there are even other candidates, which seems improbable anyway. If they do get any internal applications, I've asked to see them, because I need a good laugh. *g*

incidentally, i got this gig through good old-fashioned nepotism when [livejournal.com profile] angel_renewed said i was the right man for the job at the outset. *g*

I'm a huge fan of good old-fashioned nepotism (when the person being hired is actually qualified. Not so happy about it when it is a newly-minted sub-par lawyer who got the job only because daddy happens to be a senior partner, but that's another story...)...;)
