I think part of the reason that it never came to light has to do with the democrats -- IIRC (or if I believe some of the other stuff I have read on this), the democrats approved the machine, it's use, and the entire implementation.

Some people would be more pissed off that Bush "won" but that Kerry "bungled" it (eg an electronic win in his favor).

I personally think they should just do a series of sports events..or hell, let them duke it out in a ring. Why not? They already do it on TV debates.
