Checking out the 'hood with Jeeves, I noticed that the house a block behind (north) of mine is for sale. Always interested in seeing how fruitful it would be to get more folks into Gothopia, I call the realtor and check realtor.com.

200 sq ft smaller than GMBAN, and a block further from the swankiness that is life Behind the Sign(tm)[1].... sticker shock hits like a right cross to the larnyx.

I suddenly feel downright brilliant for getting GMBAN for what I paid for it, and wonder, idly, what it would go for.

[1] The Old Seminole Heights sign, which is the arbitrary demarkation between "swanky" [sil and bob's 'hood] and "skanky" [my part, though it's getting better, it doesn't have the same feel of lucre yet]

I'm just waiting for the crash... With things happening like interest rates circling up and loan companies advertising "Borrow up to 125% of your home's value!" it can't be terribly far now....

indeed. though i suppose i shouldn't have been too surprised - the place across the street from me, while slightly larger and lacking a garage, was also priced at that point.

Sorry, my brain is still in SF-area mode where real estate is concerned, and I think "almost 1000 square feet for $165k?! That's a steal at 1/3 the going rate!"

Heh, you don't know from sticker shock till you've lived in California ;-) http://www.zillow.com/ is an entertaining/disturbing way to find out what yr hood is valued at (based on public info only). Type in a few San Jose addys, I dare ya!

Even tho' the bubble is slowing, CA home prices never sink very far, not in the Bay Area at least. There's not enough room to expand here, unless you go out into the Central Valley, which is hicksville IMNSHO, & *that's* where the home prices will bust first & most. It's just not as desirable a location. I suspect the housing bubble will react differently based on specific location.

Out of curiousity, what did you get your home for? (so we can all experience the sticker shock)

That was exactly my thought.

Although we're San Diego.. it's just as freaking bad.

holy cow that is cheap...there is a yard! its a house!

that would go for at least 4 times that here in my neck of the woods

I am curious as to what you paid, and what it would go for now...

but like Hellsop, I am curious as to when the bubble is going to burst...npr was saying that for the last 3 months new construction is MUCH slower, but the prices are still way up there...

You do REALIZE that I just paid ...

4 times that for not even double the square footage.

1648 square feet.
515,000.

Fuck me sideways. AND WE GOT A DEAL!

Bwhahah. You're cute.

I'm probably going to go take a look at this, if you want sticker shock: http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1053963720

Damn. If only that house weren't in Florida, I'd buy it right now.

Bloogy HELL!!!! 164k. Makes you wonder what your house would go for. It looks like GMBAN from the front without the eccentric color.

Yep - one thing I always question is - Gosh, could I possibly afford my house on today's market? (hell no)

So, I buy mine for $114,000 back in 2000. I hear noises of how much my house is worth in comparison to others in my area for it's size:

http://www.realtor.com/FindHome/HomeListing.asp?snum=18&locallnk=yes&frm=bymap&mnbed=3&mnbath=1&mnprice=100000&mxprice=300000&js=off&pgnum=2&fid=so&stype=&mnsqft=&mls=xmls&areaid=25811&poe=realtor&ct=Hollywood&st=FL&sbint=&vtsort=&sorttype=&typ=1&x=25&y=8&sid=063B9021C9ECC&snumxlid=1054637820&lnksrc=00002

Mind you, this one is smaller and only has 1 bath - we've got 1 and 1/2, a 10 x 40 screened in back porch and a garage.

And, on the high end for the exact same size house, but a bit of a bigger lot:

http://www.realtor.com/FindHome/HomeListing.asp?snum=353&locallnk=yes&frm=bymap&mnbed=3&mnbath=1&mnprice=100000&mxprice=300000&js=off&fid=so&stype=&mnsqft=&mls=xmls&areaid=25811&poe=realtor&ct=Hollywood&st=FL&sbint=&vtsort=&sorttype=&typ=1&x=25&y=8&sid=063B9021C9ECC&pgnum=36&snumxlid=1055741415&lnksrc=00002

Oh yeah, on a snicker factor, I like how it lists that pets are allowed for a property that you'd be buying.

heh...life in Jersey...ain't it swell?
But if I told you what we paid for our house you wouldn't believe me.

Yes, but whatever it was, you're getting an actual house for it, not a 1 BR apartment masquerading as real estate. ;)

$164,000 for that?!A house like that would be $50,000 in Idaho Falls! Then again Tampa, and Idaho Falls are different beasts.BTW,what does GMBAN stand for?

SD and SF are scary-stupid-expensive. Ditto NYC.

People ask me why I say they'd need to pay me six figures to even think about going back to Noo Yawk, and this is part of the reason.

I think that it's probably the same original floorplan, but my place was expanded slightly in the 50's - where the kitchen was widened and the utility room slapped on the back - which accounts for the extra ~150 sq ft.

$110,000, just under two years ago.
