This is a large part of why I'm not going to C12 [thanks for the link, [livejournal.com profile] marchenland]. I lived there. I've spent a lot of time with folks who were there for and after Katrina. I don't have any illusions about the state of the city.

The other part is of a personal nature, and would merely incite drama.

I still think they should have awarded C13 to New Orleans, and re-awarded C12. What do I know, though...

I absolutely agree with you. *sigh*

I know we're going to be "shielded" from all of that. But I feel like I need to go; I would have planned a trip even if C12 wasn't there. It just seems important to go. I'm packing grubbies just in case there's a clean-up opportunity, but I honestly don't think there will be.

My mother says she never wants to go back to New Orleans -- her birthplace and childhood home -- again. We were there the weekend before Katrina, and all she'll say is "I am glad I got to go one last time." I want to understand that because as someone living so far away, I am having trouble grasping what's going on, to make my mom say that. I didn't have any illusions, either, but I am having a hard time knowing WHAT to expect, at the same time.

I'm still sorry you won't be there.

I was wondering about this myself. I had thought that it was a misprint or something that it was being held there. I mean, jeez. @_@

The offer was considered, but the New Orleans committee was determined to continue as planned. Vancouver was prepared to pick it up up through the end of October.

I'll miss seeing people, but the event has become more and more secondary for me, and the collection of factors this year made it as easy as it'll ever be to say, "No, not this time." You, anarcha, and a bunch of other folks (primarily those I didn't get to see on the gothcruise) are going to be missed, so I'm holding out hope for next year, wherever it ends up.
