He makes some very good points. I even agree with him on the problems with Libertarianism.

Rather than allow my blood to boil as to all that's going on - I still am open to buying an island. I realize the cost is outside of what *I* could afford, so I'm willing to set aside my anti-social tendencies and extend it to any friends willing to go in on this.

A lot of people make good points, however this guys political viewpoints make him seem like a crackpot. Frankly, in light of the current reasoned debate on immigration in the US, and as a man married to a legal immigrant, he sounds like an uneducated jackass; and since I am a jackass no one knows better than me.

Unless the Federal government punishes people who employ or pay illegals with mandatory prison time and seizure of all assets this problem isn't going away.

It also appears we are forgetting that unless you happen to be a native American, that we are all immigrants. Immigrants deserve basic human rights, and if the "market" were free to function these people would be indentured servants like they were in the 1800's. Fuck the market, and fuck anarchy, immigrants are PEOPLE, and should be treated as such.

Pardon my rant. I just feel very strongly about this issue.

I can't claim to know a perfect solution to this situation, but that's the one that makes the most sense to me.

But, yes - until there is a meaningful deterrent to both the immigrants themselves (as Angelsil points out, a lot of them aren't here to become Americans, they're here to siphon money out of the country, for lack of a more elegant way of putting it), as well as those who stand to benefit most (and most directly) from their continued influx, the current problem won't disappear.

Which isn't to say you're not a jackass. The problem is, the wrong jackasses are in charge.

What Angel may be wrong about is the amount of people who are transient. Here in Florida I think that number is almost nil. I think that were it as easy to immigrate now as it was When my grandparents did, well, things would be a lot different.

There are plenty of transients here in Florida, but you may not be exposed to them. These aren't the "illegals" living in your complex with 2 kids in school. These are the illegals working on farms in the country, or working construction while shacked up at a 'pay by the week' hotel here in The Heights. Florida has previously held amnesty periods for 'undocumented workers'. I am amenable to some leniency for workers who have a) bought property in the U.S. or b)reside in the U.S. for a lengthy period of time. I am not in favor of leniency for those who jump the border for a quick buck. Mostly because I view international poverty as a global problem and don't think it's fair to the millions of people in other parts of the world who would like to come here and work but can't just hop over our undefended border.

Either we have a set program for foreign "guest" workers, as so many other countries do, or we don't. None of this interim crap that clearly favors our Southern neighbors.

Heh, a lot of the people in Florida are transient...they head to New York state where the welfare is a lot easier to get on and provides a lot more benefits.

Despite what the Native Americans might say, I think even they are immigrants if you go far back in time enough. Experts say they crossed the Bering Straits from Russia and came from China and before that, the middle east.

The only real problem with the federal government clamping down that hard on the businesses is that ends up harming those who *aren't* illegal.

Perhaps deport the hiring managers of the businesses in question, along with the illegals and see what happens!

Any serious punishment would be nice. I espescially enjoy the double standards; ie, "American junkies are fine, but we don't want no damn foreign druggies here. We ought to deport all of them."
