Jesus flying fuck, people, soybeans don't make you gay. Interior decorating makes you gay. Everybody knows that. ;-p

Want a compelling counter-argument against the shoddy science Mr. Putz (err, Rutz) spouts off? I've eaten a lot of soy, and drunk a lot of soy milk, over the last five years. Yeah. Because I exude the "Nope, not masculine" vibe in such quantities that it has to occasionally be scrubbed off the lens of the Hubble Space Telescope.

Class dismissed.

OMFG...

You are about the most male guy I know.

If soy causes homosexuality, why isn't there more historical evidence of rampant homosexuality in Asian cultures?

Guess I need to trade in the Husband for a woman too, considering that, as a vegetarian, I eat a loooooot of soy. Damn... and I do so like men. What a shame.

Well, as a woman, soy would just make you more female, due to the phyto-estrogens.

But, yeah... the whole argument pretty much falls on its face with even the merest whiff of scientific examination. Thank you, fundie fuckups.

So if you drink light soy milk does that make you bi?

Date/Time: 2006-12-13 17:02 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] etcet.livejournal.com
The actual scientist in me say, "no, not really, because it's the same amount of soy and the attendant phytoestrogens and isoflavones, just less sugar."

Whatever you say, homo.

Showtunes and Judy Garland waft around my head like little Disney mobiles, don't they?

So you'd still be gay, just less hyper.

Well, I've seen your house....how does exterior decorating make you?

Now, that having been said and done, it *has* been shown that soy does contain a fairly hefty amount of estrogens and it can have a weakening effect on the thyroid. However, any weakening of the thyroid can make people feel "run down" because it does regulate metabolism and indirectly can cause weight gain, obesity and therefore heart disease.

As for the rampant homosexuality, it does exist and always has. However, the Chinese government has taken steps to suppress it since the middle dynasties.

Given the population pressures in China, you'd think that, rationally, homosexuality would be, if no actually embraced by the government, not shunned, since it doesn't add to the population by contributing to the birth rate, as it were.
Date/Time: 2006-12-13 19:01 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] mighty-man.livejournal.com
It was shunned in the old days, which is probably why they're in the situation they're in down. And let's not forget the emphasis on the first born being male.

Oh yes, I fully get the "reasoning" behind the "theory"... but thinking that soy would cause homosexuality in men due to estrogen levels in the soy is only slightly less ludicrous than that it would cause lesbianism in women.

Point of fact: Both sexes have many hormones in common. Testosterone, as a for instance, does not cause women to be lesbians. It causes us to be horny, and maybe a little more aggressive than our more testosteronally (it's "coin a word" day for Fenix, evidently) challenged counterparts.

There are plenty of gay men who have never had a lick of soy in their diets... how do they explain them?

ROFLMAO!!!
Date/Time: 2006-12-13 19:45 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] fenixinthedark.livejournal.com
Show me a study that suggests that any society that relies on soy as a mainstay of their diets has a greater percentage of gays in their populace, and I will say it is likely *still* a post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. Simply because the one occurred does not mean it is necessarily because of the other.

All people who ate apples during the 1700's are now dead. Ergo, apples are the cause of death.

That being said, I would still like to see any study on the percentages.

While I disagree that soy can cause any guy to become gay, I am not averse to thinking that high estrogen levels can alter bodily functions including thought processes.

All (healthy) men have some estrogen and all (healthy) women have some testosterone. However, higher than normal estrogen levels in men, while it probably isn't directly related to homosexuality can adversely affect "male" development in puberty and wonderful side effects like gynacomastia (manboobs!).

Frankly, I'd like to see most women get a very tiny dosage of testosterone on a regular basis =8-)

At the risk of putting gasoline on the flame war, in regards to fen's last sentence -- there are other sources of estrogen besides soy. (flax seeds come to mind)

So what, you'd just lay there and take it?
Date/Time: 2006-12-13 20:40 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] mighty-man.livejournal.com
Show me a study that any society relies on soy as a mainstay of their diet; Last I checked, China still relied primarily on rice. I think it'd be hard to do any study regardless because there is no way to definitively measure the number of gays in a populace. And what exactly constitutes being gay?

I agree that because one occurred does not mean that it's the result of the other. Small amounts of saliva consumed over the course of a lifetime may cause cancer. =8-)

By the same thinking, you think they'd encourage oral and anal sex as well as beastiality. =8-)
Date/Time: 2006-12-13 20:54 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] etcet.livejournal.com
What, I don't do that already?
Date/Time: 2006-12-13 20:56 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] etcet.livejournal.com
Other than bestiality (critters can't consent), I don't see why there's all the hoo-hah about those, except for the whole anti-Onanism, "be fruitful and multiply" dictat from christianity that says the happy bits are for making more practitioners.
Date/Time: 2006-12-13 20:57 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] etcet.livejournal.com
however, doctors are also staying away from all those people, so apples do keep the doctor away. :-)

*nods*
Date/Time: 2006-12-13 22:12 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] mighty-man.livejournal.com
And let's not forget that apple seeds do contain that small amount of cyanide that might cause death. Or any of the other stuff they put on apples nowadays (wax, pesticides, LABELS!).
Date/Time: 2006-12-14 18:02 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] fenixinthedark.livejournal.com
No fire here.

Oh, and some of us have more than enough testosterone. Any more, and I'd likely kill the man (either from increased hostility or by wearing him out).

less prone to type II diabetes?

Unlikely. they're suspecting actually that diabetes may be linked to high-fructose corn syrup, which is something I had conjectured for years and why I quit drinking soda about 5 years ago.
