That's what always gets my back up - being pro-choice doesn't map one-to-one to being pro-abortion, it simply recognizes that people should have choices. Pro-choice encompasses the whole spectrum.

right. i'm not pro-abortion, and would need a medical reason to have one myself, but i'm adamantly pro-choice, to the chagrin of my fundamentalist in-laws.

You said it. Pregnancy is a consequence of unprotected sex, it shouldn't be a punishment, yet that's apparently how the anti-choice crowd thinks.

I, on the one side, am not pro-choice, but pro-abortion; because in my mind the latter allows the former to be reality. Much the same, I am pro-meat food-wise because I am in favor of the eating of meat. Doesn't mean I want or need to eat meat every day or meal, but since I support the comsumption of meat, the meat is there to be consumed as I like. I understand the semantics of the 'pro-choice' branding as it does lend a measure of tacit support while remaining unsullied with potential icky bits, but I prefer to be less obfuscatory and state matters clearer. And I do try to remain consistent in this: pro-death penalty and pro-assisted suicide.

I've always told people that if they don't like abortion, they shouldn't have one. Amazing how many people that freaks out. Just like telling them that if they don't like gay marriage then, by golly, they shouldn't marry someone of the same sex as they are. Again with the freakage.

I think Jay linked to the essay "The only moral abortion is mine" not too long ago. It's eye-opening, the degree of hypocrisy some folks are capable of embracing.

Oh, yeah. I ran across that one several years ago. I keep pointing people to it. The hypocrisy is staggering, but almost worse is the sense of entitlement by those folks. They're 'entitled' to one because they're 'the right sort' of people. The 'wrong sort' don't 'deserve' abortions... which brings me right back to pregnancy as punishment. Geez, where's the red A?

You want to know why choice *really* is so important?

Adoption is *NOT* the option that the fundies would have you believe. If the father of a fetus is identified and refuses sign to allow an adoption, then one does not occur. This, however, does *not* mean he has any intention of actually shouldering any responsibility in the raising/support of said child.

Fact: The *overwhelming majority* of times when there is one parent wanting an abortion and one not, the one not is the woman and the pressure is coming from the man for her to get the abortion. Yet, what I see is the pro-life community wagging their fingers at *women* solely for the "crime" of abortion, and not exercising their "right" to "choose" adoption. I also see that child support enforcement is *seriously* screwed up.

Until I see the fundies holding men **equally** responsible for "appropriate sex" and unwanted pregnancies, and until I see the *reality* that is adoption law being addressed, I simply don't have any patience for the BS from the pro-life community. I am sick to death of the rhetoric.

Until then, I am pro-choice.
