Not as good as I'd hoped, but there's always the next one.

Congratulations to the contest winner,
poisongirl, and thank you to everyone who submitted their sadly-too-optimistic guesses. ;-)

was it crowded? some of the 5k are way too crowded to enjoy.

I finally sat down with a runners' routefinding website and figured out a 5K route I can do through the woods by my house. It is 5K of "country miles", so will probably end up being a little more than 5K, given the rather hilly and windy nature of the local terrain. Still, partly inspired by you, I'm actually going to make myself do the occasional 5K and 10K runs that come up in the Crossfit workouts of the day. I don't think my time will be anything like as low as yours, though, just thinking about the route I've mapped out for myself (which might be described as "along the ridge to the end of the valley, along the river, twice round the lake, back up the hill on the other side, along the old railway line, back up along another ridge". In fact, I should probably consider doing it in reverse, given that the way I've worked it out so far finishes up 6 flights of steps higher than the starting point...
