Heh. I just got one of these from my auto insurance company for participating in a driving habits program. I'm wondering if a) I can read the data off this myself, and b) what the hell they're gonna make of my tendency to coast with the engine off at 50mph a lot.

A) yes. Software's at the bottom of http://www.davisnet.com/support/drive/software_CarChip.asp

B) As long as you're not using key starts, they'll probably presume your engine's in lousy tune and raise your rates. If you're using the key, they'll think you're an idiot and raise your rates. If they think you're hypermiling, they'll consider you an uncooperative driver and raise your rates. If it came with the GPS add-on, they're checking your adherance to speed limits as well, and will raise your rates. They ARE an auto insurance company, after all. (:

I have to agree with the above analysis. This just sounds like a cause for the to make more money off of everyone.

I have found that I have no brakes if I coast w/ my engine off. Well I CAN brake, I just can't stop in time.

Depending on the vehicle, you shouldn't need the engine on to brake. Newer hybrid cars will probably require the engine to be on, but older 'standard' cars should be fine.
