I didn't watch the debates, as I would have had to stay up all night to do so, and this morning the BBC's Today show (flagship "serious news" on the radio) presented it that Palin came across as competent and there was no clear winner.

I know they're supposed to be impartial and all, but from every link I've seen from my American LJ friends, that seems to be a bit of a fib.

I would politely characterize that summary as "inaccurate."

As one source had it (I believe it was salon.com), Biden was essentially debating against McCain, Palin was debating against her own public image. Framed like that, both candidates did well.

However, if you shift the scope to the participants alone, BvP, it was approximately as competitive as Usain Bolt vs. me in a sprint of any length whatsoever. He kicked the shit out of her without breaking a sweat.

Joe 6-Pack or Joe McCarthy?

Sarah Palin looks at an adoring crowd in California and, smiling broadly, announces that the first African-American candidate for president of the United States consorts with terrorists. The crowd, without knowing any of the facts, roars approval. Palin would have fit right in, between Roy Cohn and Joe McCarthy, during the infamous HUAC hearings in the 1950's. Using 'guilt by association' and the 'big lie', the tools of tyrants and demagogues, she glibly assassinates the character of a presidential nominee, questioning his patriotism and his ethics. I would ask Palin this: Are you now or have you ever been a genuine American? Have you no sense of decency? John McCain has inflicted an utterly disgraceful candidate for vice president on this country.
