[livejournal.com profile] gruamach said it like this:

Here in the US and Canada, it's Veteran's Day! This has nothing to do with any current conflict or the politics of ANYTHING. This is about people willing to put their lives on the line and do their duty, and do it with pride and honor. They do it for everyone, even the ones who'd spit on them and call them murderers. They do it because they believe in the ideals that the right for those people to spit on them and insult them is something worth fighting for, even if the actual conflict doesn't seem to directly affect such things. For that, they deserve at least one day of respect and honor.

Thank you, to every one of you who's been in the service.

We have our remembrance day (ANZAC Day) in April, but the sentiment is much the same.

In New Zealand culture we seem to put a lot more emphasis on remembering our sacrifices in warfare than we do on celebrating our military victories. I think that's healthy.
