(I tend to think there are basically two types of classic rock people, generally delineated by what they consider to be the greatest classic rock song of all time - Zeppelin people ("Stairway"), and Skynyrd people ("Freebird"); there is also a small cadre of Eagles people ("Hotel California"). These are generally dismissed as a bunch of no-good hippies by the other two. *laugh*)

Although I do have 2 of the 3 on my MP3 player right now...

We can agree that MANY people fall into those categories you specify - no argument there.
So my answer is.... something by Black Sabbath. Iron man, or maybe Paranoid.

You're generally right about that delineation, unless you get into people that are truly hardcore. People like me because (Hendrix non-withstanding simply because he had too many iconic songs to narrow it down) we have not one greatest classic rock song of all time, but several. People who realize that choosing between Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin is like choosing between air and water to live.
For me, my holy trifecta of greatest classic rock songs would be "Freebird", "Stairway to Heaven" and one that truly doesn't get as much credit as it deserves but at least as far as guitar work is concerned, is superior to both of the others. And that, of course, would be "Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes.
The solos in "Freebird" and "Stairway" are the really good foreplay. The solo in "Layla" is the orgasm.
That being said, Lynyrd Skynyrd is actually my favorite band. But I'm extremely southern, so I can't really help that fact.
