digitaldisciplineOne of the aspirants to join my department wanted to glean some wisdom in hopes of scoring the role next time one opens up. I enjoy my colorful metaphors, so you get to, too.
What you need to have: Three brain cells to rub together, and three more to remember your shit once you've learned it. You need to be able to ask the right question to get the answer you need from the person calling you for help; the REAL job isn't fixing shit (that's the easy part), it's figuring out which shit needs to be fixed.
Let me lay it down for you like an FPS: You are standing there, dicking with your MP3 player, when shit blows up nearby and something starts shooting at you. You need to a) figure out where the incoming fire is originating, b) get to cover, c) determine who/what is shooting at you, d) pick a weapon, e) get into position to counterattack, and only THEN do you bother with f) blowing the ever-living fuck out of it.
A-E are troubleshooting. F is the fix.
Unfortunately, there is no BFG10K in my line of work, unless you count my brain.
