Actually, I've always percieved that one to be on the rightist's side. I've never met a leftist - and I grew up with parents who were part of the anti-war movement, and a father who was a civil rights activist until the day he died - that was a big fan of "Mein Kampf".
Mein Kampf is not leftist. While the party called itself "National Socialism", the NASDP opposed Bolshevism, unions, and socialism proper. They were a specific form of far right fascism known as "corporatist national-capitalism". A full description of how they fall on the right side of the political spectrum may be found definitive work The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany (http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Fall-Third-Reich-History/dp/0671728687/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294543476&sr=8-1).
I'm aware that the Progressives have long tried to airbrush Hitler's baby pictures into the right-wing's family photo album, but the fact is, he's their kid.
Since we're making book recommendations: Liberal Fascism (http://www.amazon.com/Liberal-Fascism-American-Mussolini-Politics/dp/0385511841/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294546012&sr=8-1) covers the relevant history.
I suppose that's not even enough to cover it. It's more of a time thing. Certainly, after WWII, no one on the left was willing to claim Hitler (ironic, given how many more people Stalin and Mao killed, that they still love them) but that doesn't stop Nazism from being a fundamentally leftist political philosophy.
Shooter listed every pretentious-ass book he thought would make him look smart. Seriously, it was a careful checklist of "people will be impressed if I said I read this", hardly an insight into his political views.
Considering that there is a not-insubstantial portion of the populace that thinks that the current president is a) a socialist and b) born in another country, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if some dim-bulb whackjob has his reading list jacked up.
of course, they definition of "socialism" that the current political discourse bandies about is about as similar to actual socialism as i am to an actual middle easterner.
yanno, i'm pretty well left of center, and i think stalin and mao are very nearly as big of assholes as that german fellow with the dipshit moustache... they just didn't engage in quite the same kind of hardline ethnic cleansing that the fuhrer did.
national socialism isn't as lefty as you think, unless you believe that the current conservatives' tendency to worship the established power elite and do everything they can to maintain the artificial oligarchy is inherently lefty.
Unfortunately, the book you recommend has been criticized by every historian (http://www.hnn.us/articles/122469.html) who has expertise in the subjects of fascism and the 3rd Reich as a hack job. Also, a number of conservatives (http://amconmag.com/article/2008/jan/28/00028/) have consistently derided (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/30/books/review/Oshinsky-t.html?_r=1) the book as inaccurate and damaging to the conservative and libertarian causes (http://mises.org/daily/2871#_ftnref2) in politics.
But then, any serious scholar of the 3rd Reich knows that Progressives of either today or the 1920s had nothing to do with the rise of fascism in Europe or the views of Adolf Hitler. Since you seem to be unaware of primary sources, allow me to recommend some of the best:
- Karl Dietrich Bracher. The German Dictatorship; The Origins, Structure, and Effects of National Socialism; New York, Praeger 1970. - Martin Broszat. German National Socialism, 1919–1945 translated from the German by Kurt Rosenbaum and Inge Pauli Boehm, Santa Barbara, Calif.: Clio Press, 1966. - Christian Leitz, ed. The Third Reich: The Essential Readings. Oxford, UK: Blackwell Publishers, 1999. ISBN 0-631-20700-7. - William L. Shirer. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. ISBN 0-671-72868-7 - Christian Zenter and Friedemann Bedurftig. The Encyclopedia of the Third Reich. Munich: Sudwest Verlag GmbH & co. KG.
I am certain that you will note that the majority of these definitive historical texts were published decades before Mr Goldberg's entry into the field. I'm also certain you would understand why I would take the word of certified and celebrated historians over the word of a journalist and opinion columnist without any degree or background training in the field of historical research.

Er . . . Rafe . . . they pretty much did. The only difference between them (and Pol Pot, for instance) and Hitler is that Hitler tried to export his genocide to other countries. Stalin was content to eradicate the kulaks--they were his own people. Same with Mao. Same with Pol Pot. No one seems to care if you genocide your own citizens: it is only considered an internal problem.
You are referring to the kind of people who (famously) don't see any difference between "Socialism" and "National Socialism"--who think that Obama is a Commie-Nazi. These are the kind of people who, in Texas, bowdlerize the textbooks. That *is* a tipoff to his political views.
Point of order: make clear who "them" is. I know your politics from reading your LJ, but not everyone does. You don't want anyone thinking you're defending Palin.
I made the same claims about Mein Kampf when I was in middle school. I even claimed later to have written this great paper based on it. I DID write a report on Hitler, but I have not (to date) even opened up the book he wrote.
