digitaldiscipline: (new back)
So, I've taken one of the guys from work (FNG / BD) under my wing to lift at my place. I've also been providing distance mentoring via laptop cam, which seems to be going well.

Today, for a change of pace (and because I know my cardio has fallen off sharply since doing the half-assed training for the half marathon at the end of February; I did 5k at lunch on Friday in an unimpressive-for-me 27:35), I joined BD and some of his buddies on the track for some sprint work.

Half mile warmup, some stretching, and some 50 / 100 meter repeats, then a quick quarter to warm down and send us on our way.

Big, buff guy (Eric, friend of BD's) was reliably a stride or two faster than I was (he ate my damn lunch in the 100m by probably four or five yards)... which bugged me until he pointed out that he ran track in high school (which is a lot less distant in his past than it is in mine, heh). We swapped shin splint prevention tips and squat supplemental exercises, and then I was obligated to blow his doors off in the 400. Heh.

Lifting continues apace, and I have remained essentially injury-free for a few months now. *knocks on dead tree* A few PRs have been set, mostly of the reps-for-weight variety (as opposed to single-rep maxes), and that looks like it should continue happening for a while, which is nice.

Broke out the tape measure for a belated August survey, and had to double-take when I saw the spreadsheet I keep. Apparently, this new lifting regimen is paying off a lot more than I expected; I've put on ten pounds since April 3rd (and twenty pounds since summer of 2009), with only about a 1-2% increase in body fat (at least, depending on the margin of error with my self-measurement using three-point caliper testing).

Checking out some old photos was... sobering. Yeah, getting my ass under some heavy weights was a smart thing to do.

Dragon*Con is this coming weekend, and while I am not going to be painting myself Doctor Manhattan Blue or Illidan Stormrage Purple, it should still be good to get out in circulation, be-kilted or otherwise. I might as well resign myself to getting some kind of 300-esque Spartan getup, since that, at least, won't require a half gallon of Nair.

If you do a Spartan outfit, I hope you will share pictures with the Internet. [grin]

I don't have anything but the physique (kind of) this year. Silly hat, codpiece, and red drapey thing next year, perhaps.

Hey, I can supply a silly hat, drapey thing, and groin covering for this year. Granted, not "spartan" so much as "what the hell have you been smoking?", but still...

Dr. Manhattan blue sounds like an awfully good costume to me, but there ARE these inconvenient public exposure laws. ALthough, in some jurisdictions, liquid latex counts as clothing. Just sayin'.

anything involving body paint is also going to require vaguely ridiculous amounts of Nair.

i was, however, considering blue body paint in conjunction with a pair of blue beanbag chairs, and going as Cocktor Manhattan.

It's at times like these when I wonder why I don't have a *facepalm* icon. ;-)

I support the above plan. Will be there, as per usual.

it would be very useful on my lj, yes.

i will be mostly wandering the sheraton, since that's where the track i'm working is. i think MMO and brit and trek are pretty much going to be the anchors for that venue until and unless something changes.

I bet you could do a Spartan. You've got to be better than the guys with the painted on abs.

What were some of the shin splint prevention tips?

when watching television, point your toes for one commercial, and pull them back for the next, for every commercial break.

Thanks! I'll try that.
