digitaldiscipline: (new back)
As all/some/none of you know, I signed up for a service called JackedPack, which is basically a "workout supplement of the month club" - get a bunch of samples of some stuff to try that you might not otherwise be aware of, and so forth. Obviously, the hook being, if you like it, you'll buy the full sized bucket so the dudes at JP get paid via either retail sales or click-through referrals. (Ob. pimp: if you're intrigued, my handle there is Rafe381, and I think I get account credit if people sign up because I referred them: http://mbsy.co/bGS )

Anyway, two packs ago, there was, in and among the usual assortment of capsules and powders, a huge fucking bagel. It was, as Portal's purported cake, both delicious and moist - whole wheat and a hint of molasses and oat flakes. It also contains 28 grams of protein (hayyyyyyyy there's the company's name explained....). Bagel purists may be put off by the density (it's nearly pumpernickel-heavy); I haven't tried toasting one to see how they crisp up, or even made a sandwich yet (since I've gotten away from eating lunchmeat and breadlike things almost entirely, my usual MO of "bagel/lettuce/lunchmeat/garlic powder" has fallen by the wayside).

Intrigued, and because I usually like sleeping more than waking up early and cooking, I bought a case of 'em, because, hey, perfect car breakfast, even without buffing it with some peanut butter (though putting a little honey in is damn tasty... I have not yet done my other stupid bagel trick of shaking some cayenne pepper sauce and/or Tony Chachere's creole seasoning onto 'em...). I gave one to [livejournal.com profile] cassandrasimplx as travel food for her flight home, and she liked 'em enough to buy some for her own snacking purposes, and they were similarly well-received by my writing cohort/editing victim AJ Aalto, who was apparently able to score some locally.

Hard to beat a no-prep, dollar-and-scant-change, high-protein breakfast/snack. Unfortunately, I don't think they're gluten-free, and they do contain a nontrivial amount of carbs (nutritional breakdown is 260 calories, 25g carbs, 4g fiber, 28g protein, 7g fat per bagel). Not a perfect foodstuff, but they certainly fit this particular niche well for my purposes.
