McConnell has *already* doubled down on being an obstructionist douchebasket, in his speech yesterday evening. The man is an unbelievable, unrepentant assbag, and I really hope his constituents throw him out when it's his next turn on the ballot. The man embodies everything that is wrong with partisan politics. He and his ilk are not trying to make this country better, or make the lives of Americans better - they simply don't want the other team to succeed at anything, because they think that's good for their political prospects.
There's a word for people who put themselves and their interests above those of their country... and it would behoove Senator McConnell to revisit the oath of office he took when he got his job.
In less irritated news, I'm heartened to see that candidates and initiatives across the country that favor fairness and equality were nearly unanimously voted in - candidates who espouse and embody rape culture were kicked to the curb, same-sex marriage was approved, and (here in FL) the negation of separation of church and state & a spurious layer of "no money for abortion" legislation were stuck down (while things like tax relief for low-income elderly, veterans, and the spouses of first responders and servicemembers were passed).
I do not feel joy; I feel relief and a small measure of pride. America, as a country, lurched forward in our collective voting booths yesterday, and I am cupping my hands carefully around the spark of hope and progress this portends for the latter half, or two-thirds, of my life on this planet and in this country.
Because, despite inflexible, backwards-facing, regression advocates like Mitch McConnell, the future doesn't give a fuck what you want, sir. I, and people like me, are the future, and you belong to the past.
Now, get the fuck out of our way. The future is better than you are.
