My original plan, such as it was, was to doctor up the turkey chili recipe in this month's Muscle & Fitness to have something vaguely in keeping with the holiday. That was torpedoed by getting stuck working late last night and seeing what a madhouse the supermarket was. All right, improvisation with what's on hand it is.

Into the slow cooker went:
- short rack of beef ribs
- 2# browned ground beef
- 3 onions
- 1T of my buddy Rob's "chipotle dry rub" blend; I'll have to ask him what's in it
- scant tablespoon each of chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, and black pepper
- 12oz barbecue sauce (because I don't have any canned tomatoes of whatever sort that goes into chili)
- 2 12oz cans of cut green beans, with liquid (no red beans, kidney beans, or any other kind of beans on hand)

6 hours on medium, 6 hours on "keep warm," and 1 hour on high to re-heat.

It's not bad, but is certainly not guest-worthy grub. As fuel on a nice day when a serious squat workout is planned, it suits.

Magellan was all up in my grill to get at it when I brought him in to meow at my parents when they called. However, it totally looks like nothing so much a bowl full of dog barf.
