i got a love note from the fuckups who couldn't fix my audi asking for $1900, and i need to renew my car insurance, to the tune of a 50% rate hike even though i turned 30 and my accident is no longer in the reporting period.

you might do well to look at changing your insurance carrier. after my Allstate rates had snuck up and up and up, I called Progressive and it was like 2/3 the price (this was in Houston, which has some of the highest car insurance rates in the country).

progressive is the one who quoted me $1290. my current policy is with them, but is a NY policy, same coverage, -with- an incorrect accident report on there, and would only be $865 to renew. argh

Yeah, I wasn't necessarily saying that Progressive would be best - that was just my personal example. Did they give you their other two company's quotes like they advertise they will if you ask? Could certainly be worth calling Geico and Allstate and whoever else, too. PITA, but better than paying through the nose for insurance if you don't have to. =/
