If you only knew the power of the dark side.
Postatem obscuri lateris nescitis.
"You do not know the power of the Dark
Side." There are two possibilities: you
are a Star Wars geek, or you are unreasoningly
scary.

Now, I didn't watch the Oscars, mostly because I don't care - my movie consumption has dropped from 20 flicks a year to 3-4. From the secondhand coverage I've gotten from all of y'all's comments (especially yours, [livejournal.com profile] trystbat). . .

I'm inclined to agree most with [livejournal.com profile] whippingboy: "It's bullshit." Rather than be honest about the quality of the first two LotR movies and give them whatever awards they earned on their own merit, they were shafted. The first one could concievably have been chalked up to "fantasy prejudice," but once the second one was as well. . . let's just say this year was anything but a surprise. . . and a whole bucket of "lifetime achievement" awards for the series being heaped on the final installation, worthy or not, essentially kicked other movies who might legitimately had a chance to the curb.

Whoever the jackasses in charge of the awards are, you made it a perfect no-win situation for anyone: give the whole load to RotK because you knew it was coming and the other movies had merit but had been stiffed, even if it wasn't deserving (thereby making this year's show a race for second place), or not give it all the awards if there was a better movie than RotK -in the last year- and thereby metaphorically negate this huge undertaking, which has fans in a justifiable tizzy over its wonderfulness.

Maybe because I don't like Tolkien's writing, I am incapable of seeing these films as a symbol of something larger or more poignant. They. Are. Movies. Great movies, to be certain. Which is still like saying you're the richest Canadian, or something.

We want to stop reading magazines,
Stop watching TV,
Stop caring about hollywood. . .

You are more than the sum of what you consume.
Desire is not an occupation.
You are alternately thrilled and desperate;
Skyhigh and fucked.
Let's stop praying for someone
To save us and start saving ourselves.
Let's stop this and start over.
Let's go out. Let's keep going.

Hrm... That Latin phrase should become the new Jedi motto?

It's bullshit as much as anything & everything is bullshit. You've got yr bullshit, I've got mine. Naturally, we each think ours is better -- that's human nature.

I don't know if your bullshit is better than mine. Sometimes I envy your bullshit, or want to be rid of what I've got.

You've got keen interest in something that I have general apathy for - doesn't make either of us right, wrong, better, or worse. Just different.

I just. . . fail to be moved by the spectacle of entertainment celebrating itself. It's an ourobouros that ultimately shits Joan Rivers.

You've still got 1337 krafting skillz and a much nicer wardrobe. ;-)

My siblings and I hunkered down on the couch with popcorn and milkshakes to hurl verbal abuse at everyone's outfits and to watch RotK win everything. I'm a sucker for the worst in popular culture. I found it a little sad that my boyfriend (Danny Elfman, who in fairness does not actually know he's my boyfriend) was so sure he wouldn't win the Best Score Oscar that he didn't even show up. The Academy unjustly disses him year after year, poor thing.
However, while I am pissed off as all hell that Sean Penn got the Best Actor award, I've gotta admit that I don't think Johnny Depp should even have been nominated. It's an outright insult to ignore his truly great performances (Edward Scissorhands etc.) and then nominate him for a role as a one-dimensional gay pirate.

Agree.

I was pissed that the nomination wasn't for Once Upon a Time in Mexico, which I thought was a brilliant film. I liked Pirates, of course, but it was NOT an Oscar-caliber film in my opinion. Mexico didn't even garner a single nomination. Grumble.

Heh. We were out having dinner when we looked up at the teevees in the bar. Using deductive reasoning we figured out it was the Academy Awards. ... that's how much attention we were paying to it. *lol*
