Something that came to me just before sleep last night.

Bill wore glasses. The silver rims set off his shock of dark hair well.

He was at the back of the cafe, a notebook and notebook on the two-top, along with one of those half-froth, half-taupe concoctions in a slender glass mug. His back was to the wall, his left hand between the notebooks, one fingertip on the corner of the napkin beneath the drink.

Everyone pointedly ignored him, except the curly-haired barista who glanced up to see if he needed a refill.

Bill wore glasses. They didn't steam up when he took a sip.

He might have glanced up slightly as I walked by, purposely an inch or two closer than necessary, en route to the bathroom. I know who you are, and I'm not intimidated, that walk said. At least, that was the intent.

Bill wore glasses. His eyes were sharp and wise behind them.

I didn't look at the page or screen when I came back; it would be the wrong flavor of rude. He didn't tell me to leave when I sat down, but he did seem a little surprised.

"I like your books," I said, then added, "Mister Gibson."

Bill wore glasses.
