our freedom comes at a price. What many people fail to realize is that no amount of control will make us any safer or stop people from doing stupid things. When society starts saying that it's ok to allow a government to take control over the governed people without their consent - we walk down a dark road of eroded freedoms, equality, justice and humanity.

The majority of humans just can't allow others to live their own lives without inflicting morality guidelines on them. And by this I mean consenting actions. Giving the government the right to do as they want simply because they think they're protecting us from (terrorist or insert your flavor of scariness of the month) is a dangerous path because then they can rationalize any action they do as for the good of the governed people.

There's a rather cool little HBO movie on right nwo called "Strip Search" - essentially dealing with the same thing. As much as I watched, the show seemed to involve two characters - one an American in a foreign country, the other a foreigner in America - both being held under suspicion.

The fun thing is that the script is the same between the two, with varying degrees of subtle overtones in each scenario. It's pretty darn good.

It's in that "patriot" act thing. I remember the flap about it when it was pushed into law.
