Seems that the ailings on K's rig are the fault of the impending doom of her boot drive. Since the secondary HDD is also semi-elderly, I'd rather just stuff a single drive in there and be done with it.

So: ~60GB, relatively inexpensive, and quiet are what i'm looking for. I'd normally just jump right to one of the WDD 80GB 8MB "SE" drives, but they're a little noisier than what her near-silent system warrants [I've got a pair in my box, and their whine is the main note it emits]. Recommendations for a good 5400rpm unit?

Actually the Hitachi Deskstars are pretty quiet these days, IMO. I can't hear it over the older Seagate.

those aren't the newest iteration of the old IBM "what do you mean, 10,000 MTBF isn't sufficient?" Deathstars, are they?

800,000 Hrs, lately.

Part of the bad rap those got seems to have come from Gateway using them in a lot of 2002 and 2003 systems with some crap mobos that actually ended up frying the controller on the drive. It killed a lot of drives under warranty and drove up the return rates, but *most* of them came out of Gateway boxes. The same flaw also killed other manufacturer's drives, but unless the *user* replaced the drive with something else rather than getting a warranty replacement, they'd never learn that the flaw was in the mobo rather than the drive.

Hi Rafe,

It's Callie. :) We met in passing several times over the weekend here in Chicago (we took a pic with Geekers on Friday night in the brief time that I was in the Suite of D00M), but due to some rather unfortunate schedule issues on my part, I really didn't get to hang out with your group nearly as much as I would've liked. I've added you to my friends list, I hope that's okay. :) Please extend my greetings to K as well.. I believe I may have met her in passing on Friday but I'm really not quite sure if I did or not (so many people!). Hope you guys are still having fun down at the Congress, and have a safe trip home.

-Callie

Hey! Now that we've finally met (and since I've quasi agreed to vote for you in the November Election), I figured on adding you to ye olde friends list. Margaret introduced us on Saturday morning, I believe :-) So, howdy!
