Just because I'm waiting for laundry to cycle and have finished the vacuuming, I re-pimped and re-tweaked my PC. Non-geeks can probably skip this one.

The processor: Athlon XP 1800+ (from [livejournal.com profile] angelsil
The mainboard: Epox 8K3A
The memory: 512MB Corsair XMS3200 DDR
The video: Gainward GF3 Ti200

The objective:
Let's see what this bitch can do.

The outcome:

Translation:
Awwwwwww, yeah.

[livejournal.com profile] whippingboy's system still whomps ass all over it, at least once FedHex gets off their ass about the vid card they trashed.

it's just plain ol' DDR, running at 4:3, CAS2

No raid - I had to sell off the U160 SCSI raid stuff to make rent last year, so it's just got one of those 120GB WDD SE drives with the 8mb buffer.

You'd probably get a little better performance out of a couple 60 gig ATA133s, even on that Highpoint controller. Won't the XMS3200 sync at CAS3?

HHDs: True, striping across two drives would be faster, but the 120 was on sale *g* besides, it's drawing less power, making less heat, and quieter than a pair of smaller ones.

RAM: It's running at 196MHz (392DDR) - 4/3 of the FSB speed, at CAS2 with max (fastest) timings. I can't get more memory bandwidth without upping my FSB, and I'm not sure how much further I can push the chip without really putting the screws to it @ 2.0v.
I suppose I shoulda said the memory was running at 3:4 initially to avoid the confusion, neh?

HDDs : It's all good, the WD drive's no slouch, and it all comes down to "you get what you pay for", and the price probably evens out.

RAM : Sweet. Angry. JEEBUS! I'm so proud of you right now.
