Type "Don Germaise hunker."

The One Result.

Sil & I are leaving the office early to grab plywood, because you can't hunker properly without it. Fortunately, Coke provided us with rotgut pizza for a free lunch, so that's one hour more I'll be clocked in at the office.

In related spiffy news, I seem to have gotten paid for the holiday on Monday. w0000t.

[the foul mood of earlier in the week seems to be lifting]

My thoughts are with you guys down there. How's Kim doing? She left me a message online a while back, but I never see her online. :-( I know with the storm, things are crazy, but tell her to drop me a line at some point? (You can e-mail me too, but since you post, I worry less about you than her. :-) )

She's at a fucking awful temp gig this week [phone pool for a trash pickup company], and a little worried about the storm stuff. Oh, and excited about seeing the Reverend Horton Heat tomorrow night. She still checks her email every day, tho. *poke*

I'm perky in the face of wild weather, because it's either that or go into battle fatigue mode.

Gotcha. Also - keep me in the loop about your travel plans to miami pre-cruise/post-cruise. I'm trying to arrange the best way to get down there and see everyone more, etc.

We've still got our house boarded up. We're already making plans for another hurricane sleepover.

Amazingly enough, there's plenty of beer and snacks still on the shelves. Hmmm, I suppose our idea of getting the essentials differ from the rest of S Fla.

Do people store plywood for the next storm, or do they just discard it? And why don't houses come with real storm shutters, since it seems like this happens to every place in Florida at least once every couple of years?

1. The plywood tends to warp quickly in the humidity and/or get eaten by termites. So most people don't bother to store it from year to year.

2. Storm shutters (that are hurricane strength) are prohibitively expensive. They average at about $400 per window to start. Plus, they really only protect the glass.

Honestly, I lived down here for 6 years (much closer to the water) and *never* had to tape my windows or otherwise prepare for a hurricane. The worst situation we had was the backend of Hurricane Andrew where the beaches were voluntarily evacuated and people were advised to stock up on water and battery-powered lights.
