I think the text messages she's been sending are indicative of two things:

Fear, and a good early start to the day's drinking.  To wit:

"Seas get higher!  Find out what lifeboat do!"

A very rotund man once turned to me on a US domestic air flight. He asked, "If we go down in water, do you mind sharing your floating cushion with me? I don't know if mine will be enough on its own."

I'll never know if the guy was joking. I promptly moved to the emergency exit row when there was a seat opened by an elderly man who didn't feel comfortable there.
