As expected,
aishlynn hit the roof when she saw that fucking wolves in the forest terrorist threat ad the Republican shitfucks are running. . . not because W is demonstrably the worst president, oh, ever. . . but because of the grotesquely negative stereotype being played (and preyed) upon in it. "I bet it was the fucking Beef Council who paid for that ad," she muttered, once the vulgarities abated.

Ironically, the Bush team started airing that ad on the last day of Wolf Awareness Week ::rolls eyes::
coverage, and awareness
I am also aware of guacamole. And Leonard Peltier.
And any number of other causes, plights, and issues great and small, that someone, somewhere, wants me (and others) to be aware of.
There are a lot of "awareness" campaigns that go on from time to time. I am, for the most part, aware of all of these issues. Awareness isn't the problem. What the people running these campaigns want isn't awareness from the relatively inactive, it's something more positive, and, best-case, proactive in the time, effort, or financial sense.
A much more accurate naming convention would be Give a fuck about _________ week.
Just because I'm aware doesn't mean I give a damn about your cause (generic "you").

None of this is intended to disparage wolf awareness. I date a zookeeper who specializes in large carnivorous mammals, so I'm probably fare more informed and acutely attuned to their portrayal than the average shlub.
Re: coverage, and awareness
My advocacy, not surprisingly, is in thyroid cancer -- I pimp thyca awareness week because the vast majority of people don't know what a thyroid is, let alone the fact that thyca is the fastest growing cancer in the US.
And yes, I'm pimping it because I want people to go to their doctors and get checked (time & effort). But I also know that if I don't say something, *most* of the people I come into contact with would never even consider getting it done. Hell the number of people I run into who are already on thyroid meds and don't know anything about the thyroid frightens me.
At any rate, it's *still* ironic that the ad was unveiled on the last day of Give a fuck about wolves week.
Re: coverage, and awareness
I guess I make some sort of distinction between "being aware of" and "being informed about." I'm aware of TC, but not informed about it (even though both you and sil have come through it). But I take your point.

Re: coverage, and awareness
people are, imnsho, innately selfish, and don't tend to get involved with causes without a personal investment in the outcome - personal or family member or close friend in the case of illness, animal/habitat you've directly experienced for conservation efforts, etc.
i think that this is, in the face of the overwhelming number of things out there, not all to the bad. even someone with a metric fuckton of money to throw at problems can't throw it at -all- of them (see: George Soros, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, various professional athletes, etc).

I was equally livid given the wolf is also a close friend of mine, and has been for many years. How dare they insult him this way?
