I hadn't seen this forward previously, but it seems that there's been an outcry to vote with our pocketbooks in protest on Inauguration Day (1/20), and not buy anything whatsoever.

No coffee, no lunch, no groceries, no gas, no books, no music, no nothing.

The variously strident email I got made a point of the fact that the inaugural party will cost more than the US initially offered to help the tsunami victims ($40m), and that it's a non-violent, pro-lazy way of protesting the ongoing war in the middle east.

Frankly, I shouldn't be spending any money anyways, between recovering from GC2 and contemplating C11, and brown-bagging it ought to become my routine anyhow.

Still sore.
Still not King.

Ummm... Americans like to protest in lazy ways. But then, how do you know if they protested or if they were just being lazy?

I've asked for a work from home day here. I just don't think I want to have my team mates and our staff fighting the horrendous traffic and likely awkward security measures deployed on the Metro and surface roads.

Ahh, slacktivism (http://www.snopes.com/politics/war/not1dime.asp) at its finest.

Yeah. It's like the "get out the vote for Kerry" campaign on LJ.

heh

Based on the number of people likely to actually hear about and endorse such a thing, any such protest is unlikely to be even noticable in the statistical noise. Reach half of America and it's noticable in a day. Reach 10% of America and it's noticable with a week of not buying stuff. Reach 1% of America (about what might happen if you emailed everyone in the entire country and a normal number responded), and it might be noticable in a month. And that's making it noticable if one's looking for it; it wouldn't HURT anyone until that happens for about triple that amount of time.

Well I've been trying not to spend any money anyway, but how is not spending money going to hurt the President any more than it's going to hurt us all?

Actually, I'm going to be hunkered down (now there's a term that's never been used before) from Wednesday afternoon onwards, and I doubt I'll be venturing out at all before late Thursday night or Friday morning (mental note to stock up on life's necessities this weekend). Such are the consequences of living less than a mile from inauguration central.

It's interesting how those of us that live in this neck of the woods are directly affected by it in such a way that it seems like--you know, want to take the day off anyhow, let's find some place to scream really loudly. Even if it's, oh, in a parking lot in Alexandria somewhere, since that's about as close as we can get...

Protest more. Disconnect your cable. I did.

Er, well, okay, the modem is still turned on.

I've actually received several forwarded emails about this, and saw stories about it on two different news stations today. I'm going to do my part, which is easy, considering it's the day before pay day anyway.

I work 3 minutes from DC, and I too, have asked for the day off. One because school is closed and I'll get to stay home and play, and two, I don't even want to think about traffic.

It's not that difficult for me, either. I can think of many other days of the week when I'm not out buying stuff. Namely, all the days after I pay my bills. :)

I find such protests meaningless - if you're not happy w/ the system - write to your representative.

- with my proverbial stick in ur eye, gonna piss someone off tidbit -

between this, and inviting corpgoth to kiss your lily-white (but oh so cute) ass, you're in nearly as good a mood as I am!

(smirk) that and I was pleasently buzzed while writing it all.

Just get a few rainbow colored drinks in me and pull me out from behind the keyboard and then I'm brave enough to be that same smartass in person.

(uh huh hu huuh - she said ass)

God forbid you use the 'B' word. Although it should be enough just to remind folks that the U.S. is still 'We the people', even if increasingly the illusion is wearing a little thin. But the war in Iraq is not an american thing - it's a global thing. And it's not going down based on lack of awareness from the powers that be, rather they truly don't care; globalist have a fascist agenda to push. But it's not likely that we would do anything about that even if it's not too late because anybody that calls it what it is is discredited as a nut, or anti-american, or worse! For as long as politicians need our opinion in this country they will shape it!

Which B word?

Bullshit?

Bush?

or Boycott?

;-)

My office is closed.
Daycare is closed.

I will be staying home in Virginia wondering where DC is going to get the additional millions of dollars for security that the federal government is essentially requiring for the big party but refusing to provide, thus making the city take it out of its budget.
