[livejournal.com profile] ross_winn said something very insightful this morning, but I was too busy to share it with the handful of you who read my tripe.

In December of this last year, Mediaweek reported that 99 percent of the complaints to the FCC that have led to the new fine structures, legislation moving through Congress regarding "decency", etc., have been coming from the members of one conservative Christian media watchdog group: The Parent's Television Council.

One group of puritanical fuckwits, attempting to dictate our culture....and succeeding, because of a sympathetic administration.

So, I figure, why not give 'em a taste of their own medicine?

Checking out the PTC website, I found their contact information. Including this phone number: 213.629.9255

Imagine what would happen if each of us decided to call that number, once a day, and politely request that they stop their efforts to move our nation further down the road to Theocracy.

Now imagine that this became a meme....spreading via the internet to thousands of people, all of whom called, once a day.....

If you believe in free speech, put up or shut up!

Let me know how many days it takes before they just start hanging up on you or block you outright... ;)

Speaking as a phone-answering person, I wish I had the luxury of hanging up before I could ascertain whether the call was "legit" according to my purposes. Then again, I have a sour perspective on "the customer" and would rather hang up on most of them, heh. As for blocking, if enough people were calling they'd have to spend a significant amount of time just blocking calls :> It would be quicker to just cut their phone cord, heh. Their last recourse would be to change their number and notify all concerned parties, but that's time consuming, inefficient, and somewhat expensive in terms of lost labor, something most non-profits can ill afford.

On the other hand, if a number of phone calls from one collection of fuckwits is what it takes to nudge the FCC, et al, I'd be more prone to post *their* telephone number, which is located at this site (http://www.fcc.gov/contacts.html) along with every other conceivable contact information.

Granted, calls from nonsympathetic fuckwits (as they would see it) will fall on deaf ears, but similar calls placed to Congress as well, along with a concerted effort to *keep* the phones ringing, along with even a little half-assed PR, might actually send a clear signal.

Then again, this isn't the administration best known for heeding common sense or decency :/

I would be both flattered and honored if yours was one of the first opinions on the community. I would be even moreso if you were amongst the first to join and participate :>

I'm not as worried about the whole censorship thing as I am about media consolidation on the airways sanctioned by the FCC.

There's a problem in print and broadcast. But if I recall they've changed the rules on what percentage of signals in 1 area 1 company can have. To me that's a serious imposition on free speech.
