Because the phrase "home equity loan" makes me break out in hives, I'm looking at alternatives to large amounts of financed crap.

The a/c thing is not something I'm sure is a "fix," it may simply be a "replace."  Okay, fine, I'll be looking at those next weekend.  In lieu of new windows, which is where the scary dollar amounts come in, I'm going to invest in a programmable thermostat (thanks for the idea, [livejournal.com profile] argylerockstar, and for the part number (GPMG8050, at Home Despot) [livejournal.com profile] yokes1971), and as long as I'm eyeballing stuff at the Despot, I may or may not pick up two or three packs of Insulated Window Film (70% sun/55% heat), model LES481 - for $150, I'd have enough to do every window in the house.

Home Equity Loans aren't really worth it until you've been there a year. We already looked at refinancing and that's what we found. We're probably going to do it this Summer,to pay off some of the debt we've already incurred getting this far. IMHO, that window film is shite. I used it in Indiana and it didn't do dick or shit.

Gotcha. I was gonna ping the TECO dude about it to see what his expert opinion was, too. He did endorse that full-window saran wrap stuff, however, especially for windows that don't get opened.

That's what I had on the house in Indy. We had to use a blow-dryer to put it on IIRC. It kept out some of the worst drafts, but I don't remember it doing much more than that. Then again, Indy weather is far more severe and such.

Gotcha. So much for making financial headway. . .

Apparently, El Uno's car needs work. So, I feel your pain.

in other news, Asim sends a surprisingly crude and crass hello.

RV has been out all week. Monday was a vacation day, but apparently late monday night, his MIL had a heart attack, so. . . yeah.

apparently, the job description you whipped up for me and shaky got corrupted, and NT had him decypher it yesterday. i don't know if that's a good or a bad sign, but. . . meh.

HELoC don't suck as much as you might think....
As long as you use it wisely. Over 2 years ago I took one out on the CA house just in case I needed case. It came in awefully useful in the divorce / kitchen remodel. And once again it's paid off. The rate has been pretty low - think it just adjusted up to 5.5%, but that's still much less than credit cards would be.

My goal - to be able to pay off all non-fixed rate obligations that I incur within 4 months. I'm doing okay with this goal. Good luck with the new windows (mine were sooooo worth it!) and AC (I don't have it in CA, but both places in ID do).
