Three and a half hours of busting our butts, [livejournal.com profile] theonebob, Albrizzle, and I, have excavated about seven feet of sewer line, and have, I believe, uncovered the point or two at which the roots of annoyance gained ingress to the pipe.

Also: OLD Terracotta!

Time to call the Roto-Dude to have them come out and replace about a foot of the line.

Yeah, that was definitely worth saving a thousand bucks.  Booyah!

Do i need to mark the pipe where the suspected root intrusions are? (it looks like two of them, about eight inches apart)

Certainly couldn't hurt, but if you're going to be home when your plumber is, you could always just point them out to him.

Since they're about eight inches apart, odds are good that he'll replace the section in between as well just so you only have one new piece of pipe instead of two. It may even be cheaper to do that, because it'd be easier to make two cuts, and two joints, than four, and PVC is not a wildly expensive material, even at schedule 40 and 80. :>

Actually, you may even be able to provide the materials to get them at a cheaper cost by going to a Ferguson's Plumbing Supply or similar store if your plumber can tell you what you need exactly. Because then you're just paying for labor.

the R-R guy specifically said schedule 40. with how encrusted the pipe is, i'm not sure if it's 3", 3.5", or 4" (I'm leaning towards the latter), and I had exactly the same thought - a single foot-long replacement, rather than a pair of three inch ones six inches apart, would be a hell of a lot easier.

i'll be talking with them on monday. hopefully, i can get them out early thursday morning (while i'll be home, prior to flying out to c11), which would be the best option, i think.

once it's in the ground like that it should be 4". Code (at least up here) requires that in your home your sinks and what-not run from 1.5" p-traps through to 2" vent lines, and your home must have at least one 3" vent line, once it hits 3" it can't go back to a smaller line, or you'll clog up, and then in your crawlspace your vents tie into your 4" line and out to the street. you'll find that all your w/c's are 3" - 4" at the flange though, and just stay on the big vent.

A lot of our customers opt not to be home during work, and I think that's a bit nuts. You totally want to be there, because what if something were to go wrong? Or if he found extra repairs were required? I don't grok the blind trust some people place in tradesmen! :> Much better to be there, so you can see exactly what's been done, what you're paying for and all that good stuff.

there was both digging, and planting. two dragon palms, and a quartet of bright orange & red something-or-others also ended up out front. i need to figure out where to put the WWII tombstone, though. . .
