"Senator Bill Frist has pulled the trigger on the "nuclear option." We now have less than 72 hours to stop him from seizing absolute power to stack the courts — including the Supreme Court. The vote is still too close to call. If we raise our voice, we can win.
"We've launched an emergency petition we'll be delivering to congress every three hours, from Monday morning until the final vote is complete. Our allies will read your comments on the Senate floor, and every senator will know the American people are standing ready to hold them accountable. Please sign today:
"The Senate must oppose the "nuclear option" to eliminate the filibuster, and preserve the checks and balances that have kept our courts fair and independent for centuries."
This is what they got from me:
I won't waste your time by airing my grievances about the abuses of power already undertaken by the current administration (Iraq, Schiavo, DeLay, et al), but I harbor grave concerns for the future of our Democracy if the Republican Party exercises the so-called "nuclear option."
When (not if, when) the tables are turned, another party can trample the GOP's opposition. The lack of long-term thinking and foresight engendered by the fact that this topic is even being debated shows that the current majority in both the House and Senate does not have the best interests of the United States as a healthy whole in mind; rather, their own short-term objectives have improperly trumped the good of the nation.
This must not be allowed to happen, and poses a real and immediate threat to the well-being of the United States.
