Guess whose brand-new MoBo shipped with a BIOS version that's not up to recognizing his brand-new CPU?

*head*desk*

Anyone have a socket 939 Athlon CPU more than six weeks old I can borrow for fifteen minutes so I can flash the BIOS?

*sigh*

Most independent PC shops will let you use a proc for a few minutes, they've got piles of egg-carton OEMs already unwrapped and on their way in to custom builds. I recently had to borrow an internet connection and floppy drive because even XP won't let you install to a disk on an unsupported controller without the drivers being on floppy. Cripes, who uses floppies any more?

the shop on my commute, sadly, does not, and would charge $25 to do it themselves (despite my impressing the fuck out of the dude who answered the phone by saying, "look, i basically need to rent a winchester for an hour to do X, you guys cool with that?")

hmmm.

If I knew what in hell you were talking about, I would go look. Maybe The Man has something...ping him.

Of this I am only too well aware. My Honey is fluent in geek. Not me...I just hang around him like some little off the boat asian mail order bride, and ask him to translate for me.

Call Newegg and tell them to ship you a replacement bios chip? Just acuse them of selling you old, outdated stock.

There's one more trick I can try (ahh, the quadruple bucky!), involving keyboard gymnastics and one-stick-of-ram-in-a-particular-memory-slot hardware configs.

If that doesn't work, then, yeah, I'll call the eggsters and see what they can do for me.

There's also two other options -- see if someone on [H]ardOcp or ArsTechnica has the same MB and would be willing to flash a BIOS chip for you (that obviously doesn't have a Venice or SF core).

Another one would be to use one of the commerical BIOS flashing services *shrug*
