Stuff like "I hate to say it, but that's just typical of the current republican/christian/right wing mindset--silence dissention by any means necessary"
really doesn't sound that much different to me from
"The gothic culture leads young, susceptible minds into an imagined world of evil, darkness, and violence." (ganked from the internet)
and...well...there is a big difference between thinking or saying something and vandalizing private property. The right-winger in question is free to hate guys, liberals, squirrels, The Muppet Show, and anything else he/she chooses. However, those freedoms do not extend of vandalizing private property just because you don't agree with what someone else has chosen to say (in this case in bumper sticker form).
IOW:
You have the freedom to think anything you want but you do NOT have the right to not be offended if someone disagrees with you and you certainly don't have the right to silence their freedom of speech. Too many people these days don't get that freedom of speech necessarily means having to deal with people who have something irritating to say.
Yeah, read that one as well. Stinks. If it were me, I'd set up a camera to video tape the next episode. And, I'd be tempted to put a sticker that said "smile, you're on camera"
If these people did it twice, they'll do it again. It's just sucks that one has to shell out the money to repair the damage caused by the ignorance, stupidity, arrogant bigotry (I can go on) by others.
It's too bad he doesn't have a beater, in that he could just not care what aesthetic damage was done, slap some more stickers on just to thumb his nose at them. Has he gone to the news?
I did see that suggestion made. It is a good one. I don't think that a few bad apples should represent a group - this could go for any mindset. I do feel that those individuals need to be shown that such an act of cowardess can't go on undetected.
Absolutely agreed. I hope that justice is served. This kind of thing is not merely vandalism; it's an attempt to squelch someone elses constitutionally protected right to freedom of speech because the perp believes differently. That kind of gestapo thinking can never become an acceptable part of our system.
So, Mr./Ms. right wing asshole...have you not heard that there are protections for freedom of speech under the constitution but not freedom to vandalise...
To clarify, this was a response to your original post, and not to any responses here. Perhaps it's a bit vague, but the asshat in question is meant to be those who vandalized the van. That kind of vandalism is meant as censorship.
I was just thinking to myself when driving this weekend, that there are certain things that no matter how much you hate someone should never be messed with -- partly because they are an expression of yourself, partly because they're very costly to repair.
Someone's car was the first thing that came to mind. The Psyche also popped up...someplace quite a bit farther down the list.
In case anyone was wondering -- this is partly why I don't like to do PvP in WoW (or hardcore in D2): It's too easy to take something small and ruin a whole lot of good work. You'd like to think there's some small protection in the mix, but usually there isn't.
