Or, if you live in Beverly Hills, make that forty cents.

I'm doing a pure shill here, because none of us are in a position to waste money on stupid shit when we don't have to, when there are so many better things to waste money on when we're not wasting it on stupid shit.

Get a K&N air filter.

Seriously. I've kept a freaking spreadsheet of every cent I've put into Zim since I bought it three years ago, and in the year and a half since I got one, my MPG has gone up 10% (from 27 to nearly 30).

Since I average almost 50 miles a day on my new commute, this is decidedly non-trivial. Doesn't make me any happier about the inflated fuel prices, but it takes a touch of the sting out.

Need to get one for K's car soon (they didn't have the 33-2293 in stock when she first got it). Plus, her commute's about to go from 10 miles in heavy traffic to a mile and a half in almost no traffic at all, all of which is happy-making, even without the niftiness that is going back into her field of choice. :-)

noted and filed away...now I just have to figure out where the filter goes on the new car (catually...I never changed on as I let the oil change guys do it, but it can't be THAT hard)

thanks for the info

and every little bit helps, especially since we are at 3 bucks a gallon here in Chicago

the nice thing is that a) it doesn't look like the stock air filter, so it shouldn't be inadvertently thrown out by service techs, and b) it comes with a really big orange sticker to slap on the airbox that says, "Hey, buddy, don't replace me with one of those shitty paper things!"

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

It's a really quick and easy way to save some money. The filter costs about $30 more than a regular paper one, but pays for itself in materials in just six service intervals (20k miles) even if you don't see better gas mileage. at 10% improvement in fuel efficiency @ $3/gal, that's a hundred gallons, or five or six fillups, which may be anything from two to six months.

definitely a good investment, even if you're not a tree hugger and duck squeezer. :-)

And don't forget the cold air intake and drain-pipe exhaust. Perhaps a larger radiator too.

In theory, anything that improves efficient of the engine (and especially cold to hot and back) will improve mileage.

Drive slower too. Properly inflate tires. Remove excess weight (meaning clean out the wrappers from inside the car). Heh.

On a more serious note...consider using a credit card that gives you a rebate on gas purchases. Heck, another 5% certainly doesn't hurt.

I was actually looking at the K&N CCE system for my car, but $285 (on their site, at least, though the regular filter looked to be about 25% more expensive than when i bought it at Advance) is a little steep at the moment, though they do say it'll also give ~5hp boost, too.

K&N 33-2249. SO noted. SO wish I'd known about this before tripping down to Nola & back. :D Got it now, though, and plan to go price it out and see if carquest near me has it in stock.

thanks again!

probably about $35. advance auto parts and most other big chains ought to have them, and if not, they can get 'em pretty easy.

Got one :)

Dom also replaced my exhaust and intake. With those I average about 22 MPG. Pretty damn kick ass for a SUV beast with a V8 :)
