It boggles my mind that the host city needs to come up with that kind of money to support a doesn't-get-more-blatantly-party-specific event. I'd say the same about the democratic convention too, if it follows the same practices.

the terrorist comment surprised me some, because the st. pete times is, in the main, the more liberal/democratic of our two local rags, and usually hews to a better editorial standard.
of course, they've also had a couple of writers do a fawning series of pieces on the fucking scientologists (whom the folks in my neighborhood just banded together to tell soundly to fuck off. "hi, you're not zoned for that, you're out of code compliance, and we don't want you here - have a pile of citations and a nice day!")
