Apparently, some motherfucker was scoping out/casing our house (GMBAN) while K and I were at work today. Fortunately, we have a good relationship with our next door neighbors, and she confronted the guy, who acted nonchalant before bolting.

We're filling out paperwork at the 30th street police office in a few minutes, and I plan on asking what sort of permit process is necessary for handgun ownership.

I'm not real bullish on human nature at the best of times. Those of you who recall the events of Dec '02 will understand why I'm not fucking around.

IIRC, posession doesn't need a permit, just for carrying one concealed. But then, the last time I asked was around '92 in Virginia.

When you find out, lemme know if the answers you gave you covered local regs or federal.

Well that sucks...

Kudos to your neighbor. Kudos to you on your decision to not fuck around.

Have you put any time in on a range? Will K want to partake of the shooty goodness? (I'm sure you know it'd be better if you were both proficient.) Check local regulations on the purchase of frangibles (No need to go pokin' holes in neighbors' houses, just perps' bodies). If the handgun laws are too stiff, check the shotgun option.

It's nice to know that most of the people I know have the option of owning a firearm. Ah yes, except for anyone living in Chicago/Cook County, where possession of a slingshot is a felony.

when i lived in florida no permit was required to own a gun (that's going on 10 years, but i don't imagine the Bush era has changed that much)...upon purchasing a gun there was simply a "background check" and a 2 week waiting period, unless you purchase it from a private party.

the word i've gotten from folks on the local neighborhood watch list say the waiting period is 3 days for the background check for a concealed carry permit. i'll be doing some additional research tomorrow.

Damn. That's almost enough to convince me to move to FLA.

just a friendly (and likely unnecessary) tip 2nd hand by way of the most evil mofo i know...for home defense, stockless pump action shotgun loaded for quail. yer walls will take on a jackson pollock effect if used at indoor range. and don't stop pumping till their heart does. your neighbors won't take any stray rounds.

Owning a gun doesn't require a permit. (I know this, remember) You only need a permit if you want to carry it concealed. :)

This requires classes and a test. I got mine about 4 months ago.

And to add more info - I suggest going to your next gun show. Usually there is a concealed weapons permit course that will give you the training and process the license(take the pic, bring you to a range for the test, yadda yadda). All the legal dept. needing to be there to do what paperwork needs to be done is quite handy.

Other than that - thanks for the reminder, I need to renew my own conceal.

www.packing.org will give you a lot of info on state regs. Obviously it doesn't substitute for official documents for your state, but at least it'll give you a rough idea.

I'm thinking it's time we got those P-90s out. I'm sure UndeadJeeves and Analmuch will agree.

I'll also contact Prometheus' dad and see if I can't find out where he got the bumper sticker on the truck: This truck protected by Smith & Wesson.

On a different note: perhaps you should have kept the dog.

We named the dog Indy.

I concur!!!!!!!!

Mmmmm...thief hunting. That would be a good sport. I like my little (well maybe not so little) .40. You, Jeeves, and Etcet can keep the P-90's (NO, wait, I want one).

Yes, get a shotgun. Harder to hurt yourself with it, doesn't go through walls, makes very messy intruder pate, as a "boom stick," you've still got a heavy stick if the boom runs out.

A noisy dog works wonders, too. But then you've got a noisy dog, so.....
