After a while on hold (thankfully, with decently upbeat electronic music), I got to speak with a real, live, english-speaking human named Kellen at xbox support, who was able to give me the necessary information in a pleasant, upbeat, and competent manner. After thanking him and discussing the relative merits of working a service desk on various holidays, I asked to speak with his supervisor, Chris, in order to give him a big bowl of attaboy.

Customer service isn't completely dead, but it is doing a pretty good job of hiding some days. Fortunately, you kick over the right rock every so often.

Now, to figure out how the hell I registered the damn thing with a toll-free phone number when I set it up the first time around. WTF?

I need to use the phrase "big bowl of attaboy" somewhere.

When I have to call HP I am very thankful when I get India. They know our contract well and 70% of the time are very quick, 90% of the time know exactly what to do. I just hate it when the phone system HP has screws up again and has to reroute our calls to the US or Canada since they know nothing about our contract. But I agree in that although there is good customer service out there (TiVo was another one I worked well with) it usually is hiding under a rock.

It is crunchy, and good with milk.

Speaking as a former phone monkey myself? That was very awesome of you! We both know how rarely cserv reps get their props for doing a good job against all odds.
As they would say at my last phone monkey job? Kudos to you!
