After a while on hold (thankfully, with decently upbeat electronic music), I got to speak with a real, live, english-speaking human named Kellen at xbox support, who was able to give me the necessary information in a pleasant, upbeat, and competent manner. After thanking him and discussing the relative merits of working a service desk on various holidays, I asked to speak with his supervisor, Chris, in order to give him a big bowl of attaboy.
Customer service isn't completely dead, but it is doing a pretty good job of hiding some days. Fortunately, you kick over the right rock every so often.
Now, to figure out how the hell I registered the damn thing with a toll-free phone number when I set it up the first time around. WTF?
