How the fuck does the man reconcile his staunchly pro-life stance with the rest of his "get the government out of the fucking way" platform?

Definitely not a Ron Paul supporter myself, but as I've had it explained to me by some cultists supporters is that he doesn't want to make abortion illegal on a federal level, but does want to overturn Roe v. Wade on the basis that it should be solely up to the states, not the federal government.

that's the one lapse in my ron paul support. i don't think that should be a state issue.

if it could get more local than that, i'd be good with it, and if one could easily travel to an abortion-legal state, i'd deal with it.

i'm not as knowledgeable about this stuff as many of you are, but it seems that abortion has been proven as a legitimate right, and so should be protected, the same way the right to own guns is protected. i don't think the individual states should set the bar of protected rights lower than the fed government does.

given that reasoning, the federal government can say "abortion is a legitimate right" and the state governments can decide the parameters of that right. that allows california to perform abortions until the umbilical cord is cut, and would allow alabama to grant full rights to a 4 week fetus.

roe v wade is not a deal breaker for me. it's one piece in a huge pile of trash that needs cleaning up, and i think ron paul is capable of setting that clean-up in motion.

I admit that I vote issues and abortion rights are often the deciding factor. As a woman, If I cannot be allowed one of the most basic and important freedoms, then I cannot support said candidate. I basically assume that pro-life people have no respect for women. As for any pro life people who may read this, don't even attempt to convince me otherwise, your words will have no affect.

Hear hear. I am not voting for anyone who thinks I am less of a person than anyone else, or have less right to self-determination, basic human rights, or happiness. This includes pro-life people, homophobic people, and racists. Sadly, the first two knock out over half of the potential candidates... what does that say about us as a society? Ugh.

That squares. I can't say I trust the lower levels of government to be smart about it, but at least it fits with Paul's federalist leanings.

The problem with leaving it to the states is that they can also enact fun laws that say it's illegal for you to go to another state for an abortion. That doesn't sit well with me that's what's legal for some Americans is illegal for others.
