So, I stopped by my local polling station on the way to work this morning, cast my vote in the one issue I had available (as a registered Independent, I don't get to fuck with either presidential primary)... but first, I had to run a one-person gauntlet.

.... and, boy, she was not prepared for what I had to say.

Morality Activist: "Excuse me, but are you familiar with the Marriage Protection Amendment?*"

Yours Truly: "Yes, and I'm vigorously opposed to it. Keep your laws and morals the fuck away from my private life. I don't tell you how to live, even if I think you're a fucking moron, and I expect the same courtesy. And I do not, under any circumstances, believe morality should be legislated. GOOD DAY, Madam."[1]

Morality Activist: "Buh, buh... uhm...."

Yours Truly: *drives to work, "I VOTED" sticker in hand*

* The MPA is one of those "defining marriage as between one man and one woman" petitions they're trying to get signatures for to include on the general election ballot.

[1] Edited for clarity, and I wasn't awake enough at 7:05 to toss off the "GOOD DAY, Madam" closer.

After getting my dander up by revisiting the event depicted in my reply to VF's comment... I'm tempted to stop by after going jogging after work to see if they're still there, and making them miserable with some vigorous discourse.

I wouldn't have been nearly so hostile, but these are folks who have forcibly intruded on conversations I've had with friends while walking around to try and harangue us into signing their petition.

The first time, not knowing what their angle was, I enjoined them to explain what it was they were advocating. After they'd done so, with a healthy dose of condescending attitude towards folks who wouldn't agree with their opinion, they got thoroughly lit up by the six of us (a long-term unmarried couple, a "traditional" married couple, and a married couple in an open relationship, all of whom were M/F) until they beat an ignominious retreat.

Since then, I've taken the aggressive stance with them (as I employed this morning) to call attention to their antics and catch them off guard.

I'd feel worse about it, but... no, I wouldn't. They're asking for it by trying to apply their moral hang-ups to everyone else's life, and that's immoral.

Not to be a legal pedant, but strictly speaking, all law is morality legislated. It just happens to be what the majority agree as being acceptable for the terms of law. That being said, I agree that, if someone is not harming anyone else or otherwise walking on anothers rights, and the issue is not one involving a minor who is not able to make the decision for him or herself, they ought to be able to do what they want without fear of legal consequences.

Way to shut the eejit up, BTW. I may have to memorize this and use it when I get to go to the polls next. I absolutely hate the campaigners who attack you on your way in to the polls. I honestly feel that campaigners ought not even be allowed on the premises, at all... not 50 miles, let alone 50 feet. I mean really... if I have not already made up my mind, I am an idiot and too stupid to walk 5 steps without losing the information you give me anyway. What is the purpose beyond being fuck all annoying???

the mpa is one of the most infuriatingly stupid pieces of legislation EVER. and the number of people who support it is painfully high. feh. asshats, all of them.
