I thought it was a pretty great speech. He addressed the distraction issue (Rev. Wright) but really focused on a real issue (pervasive racism).

Yep. And doesn't sound like four soundbites in a bad suit; he's actually speaking, you know, coherent, adult English.

And he quoted Faulkner!

That's some mighty fuckin' fine speechifyin', that. And I'll confess, I see him as the least of the optional evils, so when it comes time to pull a lever (or press the Diebold screenbutton for McCain with Obama's picture on it) or whatever, I hope it at least looks like Obama is an option.

Failing that, as much as Clinton makes me want to throw up in my mouth, I'll pull the lever for McCain instead. At least when he betrays my confidence and sides with people I despise, that alone won't shift the left any further right of center than it already is. The devil I know and all that bullshit.

That said, I have reservations about the inherent beauty of Obama's speech. I also understand that they are predicated on fiercely ugly political realities. If he said 1/10 of what I want him to say, his funding would dry up, his supporters would flock to Clinton for bread and circuses, and he'd probably be relegated to something far more humble, like Commissioner of Sewers, ever after.

So we've got a candidate with something like testicles. Now we just need an electorate with some.

I sure hope some fuckers don't assassinate him.

I forget what city in Texas, but when there was a rally down there several weeks ago the security from the Fed stopped doing basic security checks (metal detector) in the name of "we ran out of time." It makes me very leery to trust this man to any security when he's got a damn good chance and I hope that he lives up to all hes said and wins in November.

OMFG!!!

I just want to spit nails when I hear this kind of idiocy. Do your freakin' JOBS people. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

I hope to God the man has his own, personally hired security. He's gonna need it.

"Conservative Pundits" have already started bashing this, with lines like "he starts by calling everyone a racist...Regan wasn't a racist...." and it makes me want to cry. Leave it to the idiot right-wing nutjobs to misinterpret this treatise on human behavior as a direct accusation of their own personal thinking. Good thing the more enlightened amongst us see this for what it is, a call for EVERYONE to think about racism, explicit and implied, and to make the personal choice to not accept it.

Obama's speech was brilliant. Some have even said it's the most inspirational statement on race relations since Dr. King's "I have a dream..." speech. I just hope this isn't going to lead him to the same destiny as Dr. King.
