The Rude Pundit made an excellent point along these lines a couple weeks ago - namely, that if BO is going to get raked over the coals for not kicking his long-time pastor to the curb because he said a couple of angry, antagonistic, and not completely unjustified things a few years ago, why is HRC getting a free goddamned pass for not leaving her husband, who had a hugely public dalliance, paid for by the American taxpayers?

So, Hillary - you're a strong, independent woman. Why are you still with that philandering asshole who embarrassed the fuck out of you in public? Or would dumping his ass have hampered your own political designs and aspirations?

Note: I don't give a shit what Rev Wright said, because it has next to no bearing on what BO says or thinks; nor do I begrudge Bill his blowjob; I am sick and fucking tired of the myopic hypocrisy of the media attention trying to shape and frame the candidates. However, the asymmetric coverage of them is pure-D bullshit.

I think a better collorary between the Wright situation and Clinton is less Bill's daliances and more Clinton's own ties to conservative, arguably fundamentalist, groups: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=clinton+religious+ties.

But the point remains the same - Clinton is getting a pretty big pass on this one, which suggests to me that Obama and Wright's race is playing a big factor in this ongoing coverage. The "Angry Black Man" is a really easy trope to play on.

RP has about as good a chance of being elected as I do these days. I'll take the least-status-quo of the available options.

Um, hello? What makes you think she's getting a free pass? Do you read the papers & listen to the media? She's attacked for simply being a woman left & right. Don't *even* think she's getting some kind of mythical kid-glove treatment.

Compared to the continued fixation on the inconsequential bullshit of Wright's comments, yes, she has. Nobody's mentioned her ties to the groups and figures Em linked above. Nobody's making noise about McCain's endorsement by some whacked-beyond-reason fundies. But this dog-and-pony show persists.

HRC is being rightly excoriated for perpetuating negative attack politics to prop up her unwinnable fight for the nomination; it's a sad day when the words, "Jeez, even Mitt fucking Romney was smarter than this," come to mind.

Some people's vote will be based solely on the fact that she's a woman, but they're either so comically anti-woman or anti-man that they're outside the realm of rational discourse. I dislike her because she's too much an entrenched Washington politician (I lived in NY when she carpet-bagged her way into the state as a Senator). She's proven that she's a politician first and woman second a dozen times over during this campaign - Hello, talking aboug BOMBING IRAN to appease the crossover hawks - and, while I think she's marginally less of an asshole than McCain is, neither of them are at all interested in making any sort of honest progress.

Srsly, you're missing the point, & you've missed a shit-ton of media bashing HRC has taken since day one. The Rev. Wright mess is a hand-slap in comparison. Wake up & smell the misogyny, or watch some of it collected on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcdnlNZg2iM) (yeah, the last half is a puff piece, but that's just to be fair & balanced, thanks Fox). Still only a tiny taste.

If someone went to an Obama rally & held up a sign saying "Shine My Shoes," there'd be a national outcry in his favor. But it's just haha, no big deal when HRC gets "Iron My Shirt."

I think that the level of personal scrutiny should be the same for all the candidates.

That isn't happening.

I completely agree with your first statement, & I completely disagree with your second.

I don't think that all the candidates are being scrutinized equally. Where is the dissection of McCain in the MSM, for one thing?
