I had just escaped from a place I was prone to describing as, "Not the middle of nowhere, but you can see it from my porch."

Holy Boondocksville, Batman.[1]

Zoom out to the 100km resolution, and you'll understand why; around 50km, you might actually start to see the names of cities you might recognize (Williamsport, PA). I mention this, because Google Maps has finally gotten something other than the thousand-foot resolution view of that area, and I was trying to describe exactly how far out into BFE I used to live to my boss.

I lived on a road without a name - it's just southeast of the nonexistent address depicted (#265 doesn't exist; my actual postal address was 114 Mitchell Hollow Road); Mitchell Hollow Road is 100% dirt, and what doesn't show up well in the satellite imaging is that it's almost straight up-hill. You can imagine how much fun that 90 degree left is during the winter months, or during spring melt.

That's funny to me, due to the fact that I have been testing E911 service in that area for the last month or so.

My condolences if you have to be on-site.

What the fuck were you doing out in the hinterlands of Appalachia? It doesn't seem like a real goth hot spot, ya dig? Seems more like a place where camoflauged militias run around all night protecting their rights and people stay up all night wondering why their family tree has so few branhes.

No no no, you don't get it. That's where the real Goth Revolution will begin.

I worked there for three years.

It sucked.

Hrumph, you gave me directions and I made it ok...more than once.

So which one is yours? I just remembered that you lived over a detached garage (maybe the one next to the house with two white vehicles in the driveway?). And where's that deer-attracting tree? I think I put a tent up underneath it at the Madness on the Mountain party.

Man, seems longer than 8 years to me.

Yep, you picked it out - the garage with the two drive tracks approaching from the east. The tree is the one to the northeast, towards the driveway leading to the houses to the WNW.

I worked out there in 2000-2001, doing environmental site assessments for cell phone tower locations. Up & down Routes 15, 220, 948....

I also had the most terrifying experience of my life out in the Pennsylvania hinterlands, when a couple of locals took exception to the rainbow sticker on my car. They didn't actually hurt me, but they scared the daylights out of me.

There is a restaurant and bar at the junction of 6 & 44, next to the gas station. It's the only establishment I've ever been asked to leave, because one of the redneck locals was giving me a hard time, and when he went to the can, the guy working there suggested if I was smart, I'd get out of there.

He (the guy working) met me in the parking lot and gave me back what I'd paid for my dinner.

But hey, you were close to a town (bend in the road) named Odin. That's pretty cool.
