digitaldiscipline: (Get Off My Lawn!)
... I watched the first two episodes of Firefly yesterday evening.

I still don't get what all the fuss is about.

And, damn, the theme song was so much better when I didn't know how it actually went.

It gets better.

Firefly gives me balance. It provides one season of a western using a scifi backdrop to balance my love of Brisco County Jr.'s scifi using a western backdrop. :-)

I would allow myself to be hooked immediately if Brisco or Bowler or Dixie had a cameo.

Alas, none do. But I think Dixie's wardrobe appears in like episode 10 or 11.

You've seen Firefly? After this weekend I know WAY MORE about you, but that was not one of them.

We're in the same fraternity. Our chapter does interviews, which are a means to get to know others. This one girl had some REALLY personal questions. I was sitting next to [livejournal.com profile] chesch when he answered. Fun times!

I told him this morning. after I made sure he was seated.

It takes a bit to get going. I think there were only 12 episodes that aired. I would watch an episode or two, not be too into it, but give it another. Then there would be a great one...taper off, etc. But as it got better it really seemed to be heading in a good direction and then it got canceled.

I felt the same for the first 2 or 3 episodes. Then, you just get hooked... don't forget the movie!

Like everyone else said - it's a series that builds over time - like Babylon 5 only much faster.

It is good scifi. What confuses you (as me) is that the slavering Whedon fan base has led you to believe it's the crowning achievement of Western Civilization.

Which is ridiculous, because that's what Wrath Of Khan is.

A) nice hubcap

B) yes - I do agree - the series on it's own is a fair piece of sci-fi. I like it. Is it omgpantsfillingfun? eeeeeEeh - but still, pretty good.

We have different tastes, but for the record, I adore Firefly and I absolutely hate sitting through the first two episodes when I show it to other people. What a cliche snoozefest.

I still have absolutely no interest in that show. Joss Whedon just never did very much for me, for some reason.

I won't be the person to talk you out of that opinion. I think he's about as overrated as it's possible to be; a handful of witty asides to not a brilliant show make.

WORD.

You want cheesy one-liners, call Sam Raimi ferchrissakes. Same goes for Seth Rogen. 15-30 minutes of good slacker comedy followed by an hour of soap opera camaraderie bullshit topped off with a half hour of puke-inducing saccharine sweetness.

well, neil is, to quote a friend, "a douche," but he's a pretty good writer (at least, i've enjoyed his adult novels; i can't speak to the graphic novels or kid lit).

as for burton, he may be overhyped, but not to the extent that i've seen whedon be lionized.

I liked it, but I don't think it was ZOMG BEST THING EVAR. I think when things get popular online there is a lemming effect. I'm not saying it wasn't good, but skullshatteringly groundbreaking? Not sure.

I think most of the talk comes from how badly the network treated it. kind of like an underdog thing. :D

I love Firefly but, yeah, the theme song kinda blows.

When it was first broadcast I caught a show here and there and was completely un-impressed. I personally still do not find the structure of the 'Verse to make any sense at all (so many habitable planets around one sun and so there's this kinda frontier? WTF?) Elements have grown on me and I have enjoyed several episodes, but on the scale of best show evah for me, it doesn't rank. Deh wimmins are teh yummy, tho.

And the theme song rankles me as much as that insipid Star Trek: Enterpoop one. :-P

Loathed the Buffy movie as it was a stillborn steaming pile of shite. The show was much better and quite enjoyable (correct casting helps sooo much.) Angel had its moments and it is good that it bowed out when it did because the shark pool was being stocked well and a ramp was sliding into place. Don't know nuttin' about Castle except what I googled seconds ago.

"is there anything you DO like?"

Surely, but the good things don't raise bile and required venting nearly as much. :-) Actually I keep a lot in. ;-D
